What's inside & why it works

3-brightening-pathways

Three brightening pathways

GFF, 4% Niacinamide, and Bearberry Extract each work through a distinct mechanism. Three ingredients. Three targets. Not one active doing three jobs.

pH-optimized

The toner’s low pH primes the skin so the actives that follow absorb efficiently. No adjustment period and formulated at the level that supports active delivery from step one.

Barrier protein support

GFF has been studied for upregulation of filaggrin and loricrin, which are key structural barrier proteins, through the aryl hydrocarbon receptor pathway. Foundation before brightening.

Even mist delivery

2–3 sprays cover the face evenly without a cotton pad. More hygienic, more uniform distribution, and gentler on skin that doesn’t benefit from friction.

Fragrance-free and dye-free

No fragrance, no dye, no essential oils. Formulated for reactive, sensitized, or barrier-compromised skin that can’t tolerate common toner irritants

Science you can verify

Every hero ingredient is backed by published, peer-reviewed research. Citations listed on this page; not marketing claims.

Why You Need This

Signs your skin needs more than a basic toner

Not another toner. A brightening system.

Most toners are afterthoughts: water with a splash of acid or a marketing claim. This one is the most clinically documented step in the routine.

Ferment foundation
Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate · tap to learn more
Galactomyces ferment filtrate (GFF) is the ingredient behind SK-II's $185 Facial Treatment Essence. It's a yeast-derived ferment rich in amino acids, peptides, vitamins, and organic acids that clinical research has shown improves pore appearance, barrier function, and skin evenness. We use it as the toner's foundation — not a trace ingredient, the base.

2
Brightening — pathway one
Niacinamide 4% · tap to learn more
Niacinamide at 4% blocks the transfer of melanosomes from melanocytes to surface cells — the same mechanism validated in the serum, now starting one step earlier in the routine.

Brightening — pathway two
Bearberry Extract (Arbutin) · tap to learn more
Bearberry (Arctostaphylos Uva-Ursi) is the botanical source of arbutin — its active brightening compound, standardized in our extract for consistent potency. Arbutin adds a second brightening pathway by inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme that produces melanin before it's even formed.

How It Works

The GFF Brightening Toner is the second step in the Leiba routine. The bridge between cleansing and treatment that primes, brightens, and prepares.

The three-pathway brightening system:

  1. Ferment foundation
  2. Melanin transfer block
  3. Melanin production block

pH 4.3: optimized for all three actives simultaneously, and matched to the serum that follows.

Texture: Water-light essence. No residue, no stickiness. Absorbs in seconds.

  • GFF + niacinamide + bearberry extract work across three independent brightening pathways – pigment transfer, melanin production, and antioxidant protection simultaneously
  • Primes skin at pH 4.3 so your serum’s actives work from the first drop – no warm-up period
  • Galactomyces ferment filtrate – the same ingredient class behind SK-II’s $185 essence – used here as the base, not a trace addition
  • Fades dark spots and post-inflammatory marks that other brightening steps haven’t moved
  • Absorbs in seconds. Zero residue, zero stickiness. Layers under serum instantly.
  1. After cleansing, dispense 2-3 sprays into clean hands or a cotton pad.
  2. Press gently into face and neck. Do not rub.
  3. Allow 30–60 seconds to absorb.
  4. Follow with serum, then moisturizer.

Pro tip: This toner and the Cellular Defense Serum are formulated at the same pH range. Using them back-to-back means the serum’s actives go to work immediately. No pH adjustment, no lost time.

Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate
Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate
GFF: Yeast-Derived Ferment
A yeast-derived ferment rich in amino acids, peptides, vitamins, and organic acids produced through controlled fermentation. Published clinical research shows it improves skin clarity, reduces pore appearance, and supports barrier function.
¹ Takei K, et al. Galactomyces fermentation filtrate prevents T helper 2-mediated reduction of filaggrin in an aryl hydrocarbon receptor-dependent manner. Clin Exp Dermatol. 2015;40(7):786–793. PMID: 25786502
Niacinamide 4%
Niacinamide 4%
Vitamin B3
At 4%, niacinamide is within the clinically effective range for brightening, barrier support, and sebum regulation. It works by blocking melanosome transfer; the mechanism that delivers pigment from melanocytes to surface skin cells. This interrupts the brightening pathway at the delivery stage, making it complementary to bearberry extract which blocks pigment production upstream. Also supports NAD+ cellular energy pathways and ceramide synthesis.

Bearberry Extract
Bearberry Extract
Arctostaphylos Uva-Ursi Leaf Extract
A botanical brightening active standardized for arbutin content; the compound that inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for producing melanin before it is even formed. This creates a second, complementary brightening pathway to niacinamide: niacinamide blocks pigment transfer, bearberry blocks pigment production. The extract also contributes gallic acid and tannins which provide antioxidant and mild astringent benefits beyond the arbutin alone. Supported by the EU Scientific Committee safety assessment for arbutin in cosmetic products.

What changes — and when

Week 1
Skin feels smoother immediately after application. Products applied after absorb noticeably better — the priming effect is the first thing you'll notice.
Weeks 2–3
Tone starts evening out. The dullness that built up over months begins to lift. Dark spots lighten at the edges as the GFF + niacinamide + bearberry triple pathway takes effect.
Week 4+
Visible brightening. Spots that weren't responding to other products are responding now. Skin looks more even, clearer, and healthier without any irritation.

Sarah Leiba, Founder

Why I Formulated This

“This toner took the longest to get right. I went through two different formulators and threw out an entire formula before landing here.

The first version was a multi-acid toner: salicylic acid, glycolic, azelaic, niacinamide.

On paper it looked impressive. Three acids plus a brightener. But when we analyzed the actual chemistry, the pH required for the acids to exfoliate was too low for niacinamide to remain stable. Half the ingredients were fighting each other. I don’t sell products that look good on a label but don’t perform in real life.

I started over and built on a galactomyces ferment filtrate base, the same ingredient class behind the most expensive essence on the market. I added niacinamide at 4% and bearberry extract; not because those are trending, but because a published clinical trial tested those exact ingredients together and found they matched everything needed for brightening. That’s the bar. I wanted the toner to clear it.

This is the step that makes the serum work harder. Same pH range, same brightening philosophy, different mechanisms. By the time the serum hits your skin, the toner has already started the work.”

Product FAQs

Same ingredient class at the core — galactomyces ferment filtrate. SK-II built a brand on it at $185 a bottle. This toner adds two actives SK-II doesn’t have: niacinamide for melanosome transfer blocking and bearberry-derived arbutin for tyrosinase inhibition. Three brightening pathways versus one. At a fraction of the price.

It primes. The toner’s low pH primes the skin so the serum’s actives absorb efficiently. When you apply the serum after, its actives absorb immediately without a pH adjustment period. It also starts the brightening work one step earlier — by the time the serum adds its five pathways, the toner has already begun blocking melanin production and transfer.

Yes. No exfoliating acids in this formula — no salicylic, no glycolic. Niacinamide is one of the most well-tolerated actives in skincare. Bearberry-derived arbutin is specifically studied as a gentler alternative to hydroquinone. The formula is fragrance-free with no essential oils.

That’s the intended pairing. Both are formulated at the same pH range. Niacinamide appears in both products because the brightening benefit is cumulative with twice-per-step exposure. The toner’s bearberry-derived arbutin adds a pathway the serum doesn’t have, and the serum’s Matrixyl 3000 and Laminaria Saccharina add pathways the toner doesn’t have. They’re complementary by design.

Bearberry (Arctostaphylos Uva-Ursi) is a botanical plant that naturally contains arbutin — a compound that inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme your skin uses to produce melanin. We use a standardized bearberry extract to ensure consistent, effective arbutin delivery. The extract also contributes gallic acid and tannins, adding antioxidant benefits alongside the brightening action.

Both. Brightening actives need consistent, twice-daily presence to maintain continuous melanin pathway interruption — same principle as the serum. In the morning, follow with SPF.
