What's inside & why it works

Triple antioxidant shield

Astaxanthin, one of the most potent antioxidants used in cosmetic formulations, plus rosemary leaf extract (carnosic acid, carnosol) and vitamin E. Protection in every cleanse.

barrier-safe-cleansing

Soothe while it cleans

A five-component ceramide complex at the exact 2:1:0.001:1:1 molar ratio found in healthy skin. Built into the cleanser itself; not saved for your moisturizer.

Removes without stripping

Oil-based emulsification dissolves sunscreen and makeup at the surface. Rinses clean. No residue, no disrupted moisture barrier, no second cleanse required.

Microbiome-supportive formula

Dual ferment complex (Bacillus + Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate) and naturally preserved with Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate. No synthetic preservatives.

pH-balanced for skin

Formulated for the skin’s natural acid mantle. No alkaline disruption, no rebound sensitivity.  Just clean skin that stays in balance after every rinse.

Why You Need This

Signs your barrier is asking for help.

Not just a cleanser. Your barrier's first defense.

Most cleansers remove what’s on your skin. This one protects what’s underneath while it works.

1
Deep cleanse
Oil base · tap to learn more
Oil cleansers dissolve oil-based debris — sunscreen, makeup, sebum — through a principle called "like dissolves like." A published study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that cleansing oil removed waterproof sunscreen with a 5.8% residue rate, versus 36.8% for foaming cleansers. Cleansing oil also caused less dryness and irritation than foam.
¹ Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, PubMed ID: 31157512
2
Barrier conditioning
Chondrus Crispus · tap to learn more
Red algae (Chondrus crispus) produces carrageenan polysaccharides that bind water and form a conditioning film on skin. Published research confirms antioxidant, photoprotective, and anti-inflammatory activity in Chondrus crispus extracts. It's the ingredient that makes this cleanser feel like it's leaving something good behind — because it is.

Barrier replenishment
Ceramide NP + AP + EOP + Phytosphingosine + Cholesterol · tap to learn more
The ceramide complex — Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP, Phytosphingosine, and Cholesterol at a 2:1:0.001:1:1 molar ratio — replenishes the exact lipid profile that aggressive cleansing strips away. Ceramides make up ~50% of your barrier structure. A systematic review of 12 clinical studies confirmed that ceramide-containing formulations improve barrier function and reduce transepidermal water loss.

Antioxidant shield
Astaxanthin + Tocopherols + Rosemary Leaf Extract · tap to learn more
Astaxanthin is documented to be up to 6,000 times more potent than vitamin C and up to 100 times more potent than vitamin E in singlet oxygen quenching, per published data. Combined with tocopherols and rosemary leaf extract, it neutralizes the free radicals generated during daily UV and pollution exposure — at the cleansing step, before they carry over into the rest of your routine.

5
Microbiome support
Dual Ferment Complex · tap to learn more
The dual-ferment complex (Bacillus + Saccharomyces) supports the skin's resident microbiome while cleansing. No synthetic preservatives — the formula is preserved entirely by a natural ferment system that has demonstrated ISO 11930 Criterion A challenge test performance. PEG-free, sulfate-free, fragrance-free.

Clean skin that’s still protected. That’s the difference.

How It Works

Product Overview

The Hydrating Oil Cleanser – Red Algae is the first step in the Leiba routine. Designed to clear the day without compromising what keeps your barrier intact.

The three-layer defense system:

  1. Deep cleanse
  2. Barrier protection
  3. Antioxidant shield

Emulsifies on contact with water into a lightweight milk that rinses clean. No residue, no film, no tightness.

Packaging: Pump bottle for controlled dispensing. No air exposure to the formula.

  • Dissolves sunscreen, makeup, and daily sebum buildup completely
  • Protects the barrier during cleansing with ceramides
  • Leaves skin soft, hydrated, and never stripped or tight
  • Rinses clean. No greasy residue, no second-cleanse required
  • Astaxanthin, tocopherols, and rosemary leaf extract neutralize free radicals at the cleansing step, before they carry over into your routine
  • Fragrance-free formulation
  1. Apply 2–3 pumps to dry hands, then massage onto dry face.
  2. Work gently for 30–60 seconds to dissolve sunscreen and makeup.
  3. Add water to emulsify. The oil transforms into a milky rinse.
  4. Rinse thoroughly.
  5. Pat dry. Apply toner immediately while skin is still slightly damp.

Pro tip: Oil cleansers only work on dry skin. Wet hands or a wet face will cause the oil to emulsify before it’s had time to dissolve debris.

Red Algae
Red Algae
Chondrus Crispus (Irish Moss)
A carrageenan-rich red seaweed with published antioxidant, photoprotective, and anti-inflammatory properties. The polysaccharides bind water and form a conditioning film on skin during cleansing, so you're not just removing debris, you're depositing protection with every rinse.

Ceramide Complex
Ceramide Complex
CER NP + CER AP + CER EOP + Phytosphingosine + Cholesterol · confirmed 2:1:0.001:1:1 molar ratio
The five-component ceramide complex found in both the cleanser and barrier cream, formulated at a 2:1:0.001:1:1 molar ratio that mirrors the lipid profile of healthy skin. Ceramides are the lipid mortar holding your barrier together, while most cleansers deplete them. This formula replenishes them in the same step. A randomized controlled trial confirmed that a ceramide complex in a rinse-off cleanser significantly improved TEWL and hydration versus placebo over 28 days.

Haematococcus Pluvialis Extract
Astaxanthin
Astaxanthin
Haematococcus Pluvialis Extract
A carotenoid antioxidant naturally sourced from microalgae, documented to be up to 6,000 times more potent than vitamin C and up to 100 times more potent than vitamin E in singlet oxygen quenching per published data. Its unique molecular structure spans the full lipid bilayer membrane, unlike tocopherol which sits only at the interface, providing simultaneous inner and outer membrane protection. One of the most potent antioxidants used in cosmetic formulations.

Helianthus Annuus
Mixed Tocopherols (Sunflower)
Mixed Tocopherols (Sunflower)
Helianthus Annuus
Natural vitamin E in its bioavailable form, not tocopheryl acetate which requires enzymatic conversion that cannot happen in a rinse-off product. Mixed tocopherols from sunflower are active on contact, protecting skin lipids from oxidative damage during and after cleansing. The gamma and delta tocopherol fractions provide superior reactive nitrogen species scavenging compared to alpha-tocopherol alone.

Rosemary Leaf Extract
Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Extract
The third arm of the antioxidant system alongside astaxanthin and tocopherols. Carnosic acid and carnosol, the active polyphenols in rosemary leaf extract, are both chain-breaking and metal-chelating antioxidants. Work synergistically with the tocopherol system to extend its antioxidant lifetime.

What changes — and when

DAY 1
Sunscreen and makeup dissolve completely. No tight feeling after rinsing. Skin feels soft instead of stripped.
Weeks 1-2
Congestion from trapped sunscreen residue starts clearing. Pores look less visible because they're actually clean, not just surface-wiped.
Week 3+
Your other products absorb better because the barrier isn't damaged from cleansing. Skin is calmer, less reactive. The "clean canvas" effect compounds.

Complete Your Routine

woman applying the oil to milk cleanser for leiba beauty

Sarah Leiba, Founder

Why I Formulated This

“I used to think cleansing was the boring step. Something you get through so you can apply the products that actually matter. I was wrong, and my skin paid for it.

I was using a foaming cleanser that left my face feeling “clean,” which I now know meant stripped. Every serum I applied after was fighting an uphill battle because the barrier underneath was compromised from the first step. When I switched to oil cleansing, the difference was immediate.

Same products, same routine, better results. Because the canvas was finally intact.

The formula I wanted didn’t exist. Most oil cleansers are just carrier oils with an emulsifier. I needed one that actually contributed something — red algae for conditioning, ceramides to replace what cleansing takes away, and an antioxidant system strong enough to matter at the rinse-off stage. Astaxanthin was the answer. Up to 6,000 times more potent than vitamin C; not as a marketing claim, but as published antioxidant data.

This is Step 1 for a reason. Everything after it works better because of it.”

Product FAQs

Oil dissolves oil. Sunscreen, makeup, and sebum are oil-based — water-based cleansers can’t fully dissolve them. A clinical study found cleansing oil left only 5.8% sunscreen residue versus 36.8% for foaming cleanser.¹ It also caused less dryness. If you wear SPF daily, an oil cleanser is the only first step that actually works.

This emulsifies with water and rinses clean — most people don’t need a second cleanser. If you wear heavy or waterproof makeup, a follow-up with a gentle water-based cleanser can help. For daily sunscreen and light makeup, this is enough.

No. The formula emulsifies completely on contact with water — it doesn’t leave an oil film. Oil cleansing actually helps clear congestion because it dissolves the sebum plugs that clog pores. The ceramides support barrier function, which reduces the reactivity that leads to breakouts.

Yes. This formulation is fragrance-free. No essential oils, no lavender, no citrus extracts. Chondrus crispus has published anti-inflammatory properties. The ceramide complex mimics what healthy skin produces naturally. Patch test if your skin is highly reactive, but this was formulated with sensitive skin as the baseline.

Yes, but it’s most valuable as a PM first cleanse when you have a full day of sunscreen, makeup, and environmental debris to remove. In the morning, your skin only has overnight sebum — a gentler rinse or even water alone may be sufficient. That said, if your skin feels better with an AM oil cleanse, it won’t cause any harm.

DHC is olive oil-based with a simple formula — effective at removal but doesn’t contribute actives. Banila Co uses synthetic esters with some botanical extracts. Neither contains ceramides, astaxanthin, or red algae. This formula doesn’t just clean — it protects the barrier and delivers antioxidants during the cleansing step. Different price point, different formulation philosophy.
