GFF, 4% Niacinamide, and Bearberry Extract each work through a distinct mechanism. Three ingredients. Three targets. Not one active doing three jobs.
The toner’s low pH primes the skin so the actives that follow absorb efficiently. No adjustment period and formulated at the level that supports active delivery from step one.
GFF has been studied for upregulation of filaggrin and loricrin, which are key structural barrier proteins, through the aryl hydrocarbon receptor pathway. Foundation before brightening.
2–3 sprays cover the face evenly without a cotton pad. More hygienic, more uniform distribution, and gentler on skin that doesn’t benefit from friction.
No fragrance, no dye, no essential oils. Formulated for reactive, sensitized, or barrier-compromised skin that can’t tolerate common toner irritants
Every hero ingredient is backed by published, peer-reviewed research. Citations listed on this page; not marketing claims.
Most toners are afterthoughts: water with a splash of acid or a marketing claim. This one is the most clinically documented step in the routine.
Three ingredients. Three brightening mechanisms. One step.

The GFF Brightening Toner is the second step in the Leiba routine. The bridge between cleansing and treatment that primes, brightens, and prepares.
The three-pathway brightening system:
pH 4.3: optimized for all three actives simultaneously, and matched to the serum that follows.
Texture: Water-light essence. No residue, no stickiness. Absorbs in seconds.
Pro tip: This toner and the Cellular Defense Serum are formulated at the same pH range. Using them back-to-back means the serum’s actives go to work immediately. No pH adjustment, no lost time.

“This toner took the longest to get right. I went through two different formulators and threw out an entire formula before landing here.
The first version was a multi-acid toner: salicylic acid, glycolic, azelaic, niacinamide.
On paper it looked impressive. Three acids plus a brightener. But when we analyzed the actual chemistry, the pH required for the acids to exfoliate was too low for niacinamide to remain stable. Half the ingredients were fighting each other. I don’t sell products that look good on a label but don’t perform in real life.
I started over and built on a galactomyces ferment filtrate base, the same ingredient class behind the most expensive essence on the market. I added niacinamide at 4% and bearberry extract; not because those are trending, but because a published clinical trial tested those exact ingredients together and found they matched everything needed for brightening. That’s the bar. I wanted the toner to clear it.
This is the step that makes the serum work harder. Same pH range, same brightening philosophy, different mechanisms. By the time the serum hits your skin, the toner has already started the work.”
Same ingredient class at the core — galactomyces ferment filtrate. SK-II built a brand on it at $185 a bottle. This toner adds two actives SK-II doesn’t have: niacinamide for melanosome transfer blocking and bearberry-derived arbutin for tyrosinase inhibition. Three brightening pathways versus one. At a fraction of the price.
It primes. The toner’s low pH primes the skin so the serum’s actives absorb efficiently. When you apply the serum after, its actives absorb immediately without a pH adjustment period. It also starts the brightening work one step earlier — by the time the serum adds its five pathways, the toner has already begun blocking melanin production and transfer.
Yes. No exfoliating acids in this formula — no salicylic, no glycolic. Niacinamide is one of the most well-tolerated actives in skincare. Bearberry-derived arbutin is specifically studied as a gentler alternative to hydroquinone. The formula is fragrance-free with no essential oils.
That’s the intended pairing. Both are formulated at the same pH range. Niacinamide appears in both products because the brightening benefit is cumulative with twice-per-step exposure. The toner’s bearberry-derived arbutin adds a pathway the serum doesn’t have, and the serum’s Matrixyl 3000 and Laminaria Saccharina add pathways the toner doesn’t have. They’re complementary by design.
Bearberry (Arctostaphylos Uva-Ursi) is a botanical plant that naturally contains arbutin — a compound that inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme your skin uses to produce melanin. We use a standardized bearberry extract to ensure consistent, effective arbutin delivery. The extract also contributes gallic acid and tannins, adding antioxidant benefits alongside the brightening action.
Both. Brightening actives need consistent, twice-daily presence to maintain continuous melanin pathway interruption — same principle as the serum. In the morning, follow with SPF.
