What's inside & why it works

Five active mechanisms

Niacinamide, NAG, Gluconolactone, Laminaria Saccharina, and Peptide Complex. Each targets a different mechanism of brightening and aging. Not one active carrying five jobs.

Brightening at two distinct points

Niacinamide blocks melanosome transfer. NAG interrupts melanin production upstream. Two mechanisms, studied together in a randomized controlled trial of 202 participants.

PHA — No Irritation

Gentle resurfacing without the irritation

Gluconolactone (PHA) resurfaces and delivers anti-glycation benefits without the sensitivity risk of AHAs. Better tolerated by reactive and compromised skin.

Collagen-signaling peptides

Peptide Complex (Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 + Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7) supports collagen synthesis signaling. Supplier in vivo data reports an age-reversal equivalent of 2–5.5 years.

barrier-safe-cleansing

Hydrates and supports replenishing the barrier

Panthenol supports fibroblast proliferation and replenish the barrier. Laminaria Saccharina provides brown-seaweed polysaccharide humectancy at the skin’s surface.

Science you can verify

Why You Need This

Signs your barrier is asking for help.

Not another serum. A five-pathway system.

Most serums pick one thing. Brighten. Or hydrate. Or fight fine lines. This one does five, and not by throwing every trending ingredient into a bottle.

1
Brightening
Niacinamide + NAG · tap to learn more
Niacinamide and N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG) interrupt the melanin pathway from two different angles — niacinamide blocks pigment transfer, NAG inhibits the enzyme that produces it. A randomized, double-blind trial (n=202) published in the British Journal of Dermatology confirmed significant hyperpigmentation reduction when used together.
¹ British Journal of Dermatology, PubMed ID: 19845667
2
Gentle exfoliation
Gluconolactone PHA · tap to learn more
Gluconolactone (PHA) exfoliates the surface without the irritation of glycolic or lactic acid. Larger molecular weight means it stays in the outer layer — dissolving dead cells so the actives underneath can actually reach skin.

Barrier support + hydration
Panthenol + Laminaria Saccharina · tap to learn more
Panthenol pulls water into the barrier from the inside. Laminaria Saccharina Extract marine polysaccharides form a moisture-retaining film on the surface through hydrogen bonding, reducing transepidermal water loss. Two hydration mechanisms, two different directions.

Collagen signaling
Peptide Complex · tap to learn more
Peptide Complex (Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 + Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7) signals fibroblasts to produce collagen. Croda's in vivo clinical data shows anti-wrinkle efficacy equivalent to a 2-year age reversal within one month.

5
Antioxidant defense
Gluconolactone + Sodium Phytate · tap to learn more
Gluconolactone doubles as an antioxidant and anti-glycation agent — protecting the formula's actives and your skin's collagen from oxidative breakdown. Sodium phytate chelates metal ions that would otherwise degrade niacinamide and the peptide complex over time.

Five mechanisms. No filler.

How It Works

Cellular Defense Serum is the third step in the Leiba routine. The treatment step between toner and moisturizer, where the actual brightening and improvement happen.

The five-pathway architecture:

  1. Brightening
  2. Gentle exfoliation
  3. Barrier replenishing
  4. Collagen signaling
  5. Antioxidant defense

Sixteen ingredients, all active at pH 5.0–5.5. No filler botanicals, no fragrance, no dye.

Texture: Absorbs in under a minute, no residue, no pilling. Layers clean under moisturizer and SPF.

  • Niacinamide + NAG brighten from two directions: one blocks pigment transfer, one stops production at the source
  • Gluconolactone PHA smooths texture without the irritation of glycolic or lactic acid. Suitable for daily use on sensitive skin
  • Panthenol + Laminaria Saccharina hydrate from two different structural directions: barrier and surface simultaneously
  • Peptide Complex signals fibroblasts to produce Type I and III collagen
  • Gluconolactone and sodium phytate protect the formula itself, so the actives that reach your skin are as potent as the day it was made
  1. After toner, dispense 3–4 drops onto clean fingertips.
  2. Press gently into face and neck. Do not rub.
  3. Allow 60 seconds to absorb fully before applying moisturizer.
  4. In the AM, follow with SPF 30 or higher.
  5. Use morning and evening for best results.

Pro tip: Apply to slightly damp skin immediately after your toner. The pH-primed surface lets the niacinamide and PHA actives work from the first application. No adjustment period.

Niacinamide
Niacinamide
Vitamin B3
Blocks melanosomes from transferring pigment to surface cells, interrupting the brightening pathway at the delivery stage. Also supports NAD+ production, strengthens the moisture barrier, and regulates sebum. Combined with NAG, it is the only brightening system with an independently published randomized controlled trial showing combined efficacy in 202 participants.
¹ British Journal of Dermatology, PubMed ID: 19845667
N-Acetyl Glucosamine
N-Acetyl Glucosamine
NAG
Inhibits tyrosinase; the enzyme that synthesizes melanin before pigment is even produced. This makes it complementary to niacinamide rather than redundant: niacinamide blocks transfer, NAG blocks production. Also stimulates hyaluronic acid synthesis in the skin for an additional hydration benefit.
² Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology. 2007;6(1):20–26. PubMed ID: 17348991
Gluconolactone
Gluconolactone
Polyhydroxy Acid (PHA)
A polyhydroxy acid with a larger molecular weight than glycolic or lactic acid. It exfoliates the outermost surface layer without penetrating deep enough to irritate living tissue. This makes it suitable for sensitive skin and daily use. It also functions as an antioxidant, blocks glycation (the sugar-collagen crosslinking that causes skin stiffness and yellowing), and clears the path for the actives underneath to reach skin more effectively.
⁵ Jarząbek-Perz S, et al. Evaluation of the effects of 10% and 30% gluconolactone chemical peel on sebum, pH, and TEWL. Cutis. 2004;73(2 Suppl):3–13. PubMed ID: 15002657
Panthenol
Panthenol
Pro-Vitamin B5
Converts to vitamin B5 on the skin, functioning as both a humectant and emollient simultaneously, drawing water into the barrier while sealing it from above. Published research confirms panthenol promotes fibroblast development, supports collagen and elastin synthesis, and has documented anti-inflammatory properties that help offset the mild irritation potential of the exfoliating actives in this formula.

Laminaria Saccharina Extract
Laminaria Saccharina Extract
Marine Polysaccharides
Ocean-derived polysaccharides that form a moisture-retaining film on the barrier surface through hydrogen bonding, reducing transepidermal water loss. The mechanism is structurally different from panthenol's barrier support. Panthenol works from inside the barrier, Laminaria Saccharina films the surface. Two hydration mechanisms, two different directions.

Peptide Complex
Peptide Complex
Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 + Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7
Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 mimics the GHK tissue repair fragment, signaling fibroblasts to increase Type I and Type III collagen production. Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 calms chronic low-grade inflammation that silently degrades collagen over time. Croda's in vivo clinical data shows anti-wrinkle efficacy equivalent to 2–5.5 years of age reversal. Selected over Argireline specifically because the clinical evidence is substantially stronger.

Sodium Phytate
Sodium Phytate
Phytic Acid Salt
A chelating agent that binds trace metal ions in the formula: iron, copper, and others, that would otherwise catalyze oxidative reactions and degrade the niacinamide and peptide complex before they reach your skin. It is a formula stabilizer, not a marketing ingredient. Its presence is why the actives in this formula remain effective to the last drop.

What changes — and when.

Week 1
Texture smooths out first. Gluconolactone clears dead surface cells within days — skin feels less rough, other products absorb better.
Weeks 2–3
The brightening starts showing. Spots lighten at the edges. The overall dullness lifts. People around you might notice before you do.
Week 4+
Fine lines look less pronounced — that's the Peptide Complex collagen signaling catching up. Skin looks clearer, not just brighter. This is the phase where you stop wondering if it's working.

Leiba Beauty Hydrating Oil Cleanser with red algae — fragrance-free oil cleanser made in the USA

Sarah Leiba, Founder

Why I Formulated This

“My skin changed gradually. The glow I had at 22 wasn’t there at 32. Marks from years of inconsistent SPF weren’t budging. I was cycling through vitamin C (always irritated me) and retinol (great for three nights, then two weeks of recovery). The niacinamide product was the one that actually did something.

That’s when I found the study — a double-blind RCT in the British Journal of Dermatology where 202 people used niacinamide and NAG together and got statistically significant brightening. I thought: why is the ingredient with real proof sitting in $12 drugstore products while the $80 serums lead with vitamin C?

I worked with our formulator to build a serum anchored to that clinical foundation. PHA exfoliation, Laminaria Saccharina Extract for marine-origin hydration that complements panthenol instead of duplicating it. Peptide Complex over Argireline because the data actually supports it. We created a twelve-ingredient product, five mechanisms, and a serum I actually want to use every day.”

Product FAQs

Most serums deliver one or two active ingredients targeting one mechanism. This serum targets five simultaneously: niacinamide + NAG interrupt melanin production from two different angles; gluconolactone PHA clears dead surface cells without irritation; panthenol and Laminaria Saccharina marine polysaccharides hydrate from two different directions; and Matrixyl 3000 signals fibroblasts to produce collagen. Each pathway is independent — they don’t compete, they stack.

Yes. The PHA (gluconolactone) was specifically chosen over AHAs because its larger molecular structure means it stays in the outer skin layer — it doesn’t penetrate deeply enough to cause stinging or irritation. The formula is fragrance-free, dye-free, and formulated at pH 5.0–5.5, which matches your skin’s natural range. If you’re new to actives, start with PM use only for the first two weeks.

Yes — it’s designed to layer. Apply after toner, before moisturizer. If you’re using retinol, apply this first and retinol on top (or alternate nights). If you’re using a vitamin C serum, use vitamin C in the morning and this serum at night. The PHA in this formula actually enhances the absorption of products applied on top by clearing the surface layer.

The Ordinary uses niacinamide alone with zinc. This formula adds four additional mechanisms: N-Acetyl Glucosamine (a clinically validated pairing with niacinamide, published in the British Journal of Dermatology), Gluconolactone PHA for surface exfoliation, Laminaria Saccharina marine polysaccharides for deep hydration, and Matrixyl 3000 peptide complex for collagen signaling. It also doesn’t contain zinc, which can cause temporary flushing when combined with niacinamide in some formulations.

Matrixyl 3000 — a combination of Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 and Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7. Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 mimics the GHK tissue repair signal, stimulating fibroblasts to produce Type I and III collagen. Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 has anti-inflammatory activity that slows collagen degradation. Croda’s in vivo clinical data showed anti-wrinkle efficacy equivalent to a 2-year age reversal within one month of use.

Both. In the morning, it layers cleanly under SPF and doesn’t pill. At night, it works alongside your other actives. If your routine includes retinol or a strong exfoliant, use this serum first — the PHA preps the surface, and the barrier-supporting ingredients help offset any irritation from the actives that follow.
